I apologise to this website’s watchers for the fact that I have not posted anything for a couple of days. I and my family have been struck down by Madame Grippe, a tenacious and painful lady whom nobody wants to sleep with, though anyone struck by her – must. Today I hope to write about a lady who must be a relative of La Grippe, in that both females are extremely disagreeable, though myths about both have been around for centuries. Today or tomorrow I write about Elizabeth Báthory, Countess (or ‘Blood Countess’) of Nádasdy.
This site has gained more than 10,000 regular readers since it started eleven months ago. I thank these faithful watchers with all my heart. The site was designed to assist especially international students of History as a University discipline. It is kept as brief, to the point, and with as few dates as possible. Nothing is more off-putting to the student than struggling through sixty pages of closely-written text in order to make less than copious notes.
I hope and believe that the bibliography I consult is accurate. It is not of the Wikipedia kind. Please keep the Comments going, which, as long as they are not ‘spam’, are useful and encouraging. Some are not, as was the case with a Comment on my piece about The Holocaust, which suggested in three American-inspired words that the author should indulge in fellatio with someone called ‘his Dick’. I could not see any correlation between The Holocaust and a presumably pleasurable physical act. On the other hand, another Comment pointed out correctly that my total figure for deaths occurring in the Holocaust was less than it should be. This was indeed an error, explained in part by my forgetting about Soviet Russia’s total contribution, and Poland’s.
A belated Happy New Year to our intrepid bloggers,
Dean Swift.
